The Parent’s Responsibility! April 30, 2006

In response to  Bubbl25's blog concerning Children and the Internet, I agree with the blogger that there are many solutions out there available to assist parents, etc. in shielding their kids from unwanted porn, but the first line of defense(as the blogger puts it) should be the parents themselves.  The Government can put up all sorts of warnings on porn sites, and use other methods to deter underage kids from viewing porn, such as the new Website Labeling Laws, but without cooperation from parents, this problem will never be reversed.  Parents need to start thinking in terms of taking matters in to their own hands to prevent their children from viewing porn.

Not just preventing them from viewing it, though, but explaining to them why it is that they’re being prevented from viewing it. Any kid can walk into a barnes & noble, head for the sexuality section, and get way more porn than they can handle. It’s a question of which kid is heading there, and why. If you can get them to understand the point of the block, you’ll get much farther than just saying “because I said so”… that would only encourage them to “rebel” and try the opposite of whatever you said (after all, you didn’t have a good reason).
